Jack Mula joined the Patriots during the 1999 season and enters his seventh season as a major contributor to the most prosperous period in the organizations history, both on and off the field. Over the last four years, the franchise has celebrated three Super Bowl championships and is universally recognized as a model professional sports organization. Mula was named Chief Administrative Counsel in 2004 after four years as the team's director of legal and business affairs. He has served as the primary negotiator for the player contracts of each of the team's draft choices since the Belichick era began and works in concert with Scott Pioli on veteran and free agent contracts. In addition he is the club's legal and business liaison with the NFL Management Council and League Office.
Mula also serves as legal and administrative counsel to all departments of the organization. His responsibilities involve him in the negotiation and review of business contracts for the Patriots, Gillette Stadium, New England Revolution and other Kraft Group entities including sponsorhips, promotions, hospitality, naming rights, stadium operations, real estate acquisition, concerts and special events. Jack was also instrumental in the planning and development of Gillette Stadium, working directly with local and state government, as well as the business and residential communities planning for site access and game day operations.
Prior to joining the Krafts' organization, Mula was a successful sports attorney and player agent whose clients included many marquee players in college football and the National Football League. He resurrected the professional career of Doug Flutie bringing the former Heisman winner back from the Canada Football League to the NFL, where Flutie fl ourished and earned Pro Bowl honors in his first year return to the league with the Buffalo Bills. He has since played seven NFL seasons in Buffalo and San Diego and, in the spring of 2005, returned home when he signed with the Patriots. Mula's client list also included, in addition to Flutie, fellow Boston College Hall of Famers Fred Smerlas, a fi ve time NFL All-Pro, NFL Rookie of the Year Troy Stradford, Outland trophy winner and former Patriot draft choice Mike Ruth, All-American and former Super Bowl winner Steve DeOssie, the famous brother tandem of Raghib “Rocket” and Qadry “Missle” Ismail, as well as current NFL running backs Priest Holmes and Ricky Williams. Mula also negotiated player contracts for Detroit Lions President Matt Millen and the New Orleans Saints Head Coach Jim Haslett.
Mula grew up in Waltham, Mass., where he was a teamate with Smerlas on the celebrated 1975 Waltham High team which sent a still existing state record 10 players into Division 1 college football. He also played football and graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1980, where he received his bachelor's degree in business administration and co-founded the university's chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He later earned his Juris Doctorate from the New England School of Law. Mula is a member of the Sports Lawyers Association and a former co-chair of the Boston Bar Association's Sports and Entertainment Law Committee. He is also a former city attorney in Waltham, where he still resides and remains active in the local sports community and is also a frequent guest speaker at local community service organizations and various academic institutions. He and his wife, Pam, have three sons, Ryan, Christian and Evan.
